Deadline to act before irreversible climate change: 2017

The International Energy Association reported that 2017 is the deadline by which we must move away from fossil fuels before devastating climate change consequences.

Climate change is an issue often discussed and heavily debated. While the details may be fuzzy, experts agree that it is occurring, and at an alarming rate. Now, new data shows just how quickly climate change is happening—according to news sources, the International Energy Association (IEA) has recently reported that 2017 is the deadline by which we must move away from fossil fuels before devastating climate change consequences.

Currently, emission volumes—a way scientists evaluate global warming—have 390 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide. Any higher than 450 ppm signals irreversible damages.

The IEA is calling for a transition away from fossil fuels to greener, renewable sources of energy. However, fossil fuel power plants continue to be built. The high costs associated with this transition have been cited as a reason to avoid action; however, the costs to try to fix the consequences of climate change will be exponentially higher than costs to act to prevent them.

Individuals can create meaningful change with a few simple actions. While individual action may not be enough in itself, it can create a snowball effect, inspiring and motivating others, and putting pressure on governments and corporations. So write letters to your government leaders, sign petitions, and talk about the issue with your friends and family!
