Giant Iceberg set to break off of Antarctica

Scientists are warning of a massive iceberg set to break off of the coast of Antarctica.

According to news sources, NASA scientists are warning of a massive iceberg set to break off of the coast of Antarctica. The iceberg, located at Pine Island Glacier, is the size of New York and will break off within the next few months, estimate scientists. Currently, the crack is larger than 30 km long and 60 m deep.

The consequences of an iceberg this large are numerous, including danger to surrounding shipping vessels, the creation of obstacles for animals who navigate the area, and the addition of an immense amount of freshwater into the sea, which can disrupt the natural balance. As it continues to drift, carried by currents, it will have to be monitored.

The iceberg is not likely caused by climate change, according to news sources. However, it is known that the Pine Island Glacier has been melting at an alarming rate—likely due to climate change.

Climate change has many destructive consequences, including rising sea levels, the melting of polar ice, and an increase in natural disasters.

Thankfully, individuals can make lifestyle changes to reduce their carbon footprint.
